On March 18, 1922, Judith Kaplan, the oldest daughter of Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, became the first girl in the United States to be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah.
On March 19, 2022, to mark the 100th anniversary of the first American bat mitzvah, Sha’are Shalom hosted a Sisterhood Shabbat.
