Social Action

 

The goal of the Social Action Committee is to provide opportunities for "tikkun olam", in keeping with a commitment to live a Jewish life by helping to repair the world. Social Action activities at Congregation Sha'are Shalom center around various programs on behalf of the congregation locally, nationally, and globally, as well as in support of CSS members.

A synopsis of Social Action activities follows.

 

CSS Member Support

Initiated the newly formed Hesed team to standardize practices as a "caring community" for congregants experiencing life events such as illness, bereavement, and the birth or adoption of a child.

 

Food Drives

  • High Holiday food drive to benefit the Loudoun Interfaith Relief Food Pantry

  • "Restock the Shelves " winter food drive for the Loudoun Interfaith Relief Food Pantry

  • Provided food donations for the Loudoun Interfaith Relief Food Pantry throughout the year

  • Participated in the "Love Your Neighbor, Feed Your Neighbor" county-wide food drive endorsed by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.

 

Interfaith Community Projects

  • Participated in BRIDGES (building relationships for interfaith dialogue, goodwill, education, and service) meetings; provided lunch for December BRIDGES meeting at CSS

  • Conducted a coat drive, with donations provided to Mobile Hope

  • Participated in the Community Table of Loudoun dinner provided in December, co- sponsored by CSS and St. James Episcopal Church, Leesburg

  • Collected money for direct support to Ebola victims in conjunction with Harmony United Methodist Church, Hamilton

 

Community Outreach

  • Participated as a contributor to CSS's monthly provision of dinner for the Loudoun County Cold Weather Shelter

  • Commencing in April 2015, provided and served dinner to residents of the Homeless Shelter on a monthly basis

  • Participated in CSS's Outreach program for residents of county group homes 

 

Good Deeds Day 2018 (GDD)

  • Member of the GDD planning committee

  • Assisted with coordination of RUJEC's pine cone bird feeder project with Boulder Crest Retreat

  • Sponsored crafting of yarn dolls for handouts to children by the Hamilton Rescue Squad

  • Volunteered to clean-up the Loudoun County Homeless Shelter

  • Provided funds for the post GDD community lunch

 

Jewish Charities

  • Participated in JWI Mother's Day Flower Project

Loudoun Homeless Shelter Meals

Once each month we prepare and serve a complete meal to the families currently housed at the shelter.  Please watch for the monthly reminder and Signup Genius link to contribute.
